NANCY MENK

Since its foundation, Ensemble Concept/21 has curated the annual program NEW VOICES IN MICHIANA, to promote the work of young composers of Michiana and the Greater Chicago area who won their selection by competition. This annual event also includes works by established composers, frequently under the direction of a guest conductor. Last Spring 2020, the pandemic stopped us from offering our concert, denying the young composers the opportunity to hear their works, and all of us the pleasure of discovery of new music by our emerging talents. However, with the help of our institutional and private donors, we were able to get together for a reading of their works, and we are thrilled to share this documentary recording with you all, our friends and audience members.
You will meet the young and gifted composers Hannah Azcuna, Macy Camille, Lupita Diaz-Donato and Joey Meyers, as they explain how their thoughts and images are translated into musical compositions. The program also includes two works by Ilya Levinson, Associate Professor of Composition at Columbia College in Chicago, and Carmen-Helena Téllez, EC/21’s new artistic director. Guest conductor Nancy Menk is a central figure in the musical scene of South Bend. It is a privilege to count with her artistic leadership for this virtual reading.

EC/21 wants to announce with gratitude that we recently have received support from the Indiana Arts Commission, the Stanley A. and Flora P. Clark Memorial Community Trust Foundation and the John Eaton Foundation, to pursue new musical initiatives adapted to the challenges of the pandemic. We also want to thank all of you in our audience, who have faithfully followed our efforts to showcase and disseminate new musical creativity in our region. We will be joining you all back soon!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Our last concerts of the season (March 6, April 3 and 22, 2020 in South Bend and Chicago) had to be canceled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dedicated as we are to our long-standing project NEW VOICES IN MICHIANA, supporting young composers of the region, we are now preparing a new video performance that we will announce in the next few days! Please stay tuned and visit our page for updates!
We will also announce a series of events adapted to the new social conditions imposed by the pandemic, seeking to keep you all engaged with the miracle of creating new music for our times. If you wish to be placed in our mailing list, send us a note at ensembleconcept21@gmail.com
